Libraries Offering Digital Downloads

Posted On: Tue. Aug. 10 2010

It's been years since I've been to the library to actually borrow a book, and after what I discovered today it may be even longer.

The Annapolis Valley Libraries are now offering digital downloads for library members. They have hundreds of ebooks and audio books that you can borrow right from your computer. They aren't just old books either. One book I've been meaning to read, because of all the good things I've heard about it, is Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, they just happened to have an audio book version available, so I choose to download it.

You are required to download software to hear the audio books but they offer it for many systems. I downloaded it for Windows and for my iPhone. Unfortunately the iPhone version doesn't play WMA format audio books, which is what I wanted to listen to. Once it was installed the software had to do an update to my Windows Media Player, but after that I was able to listen to the audio book no problem.

Libraries have really changed over the past number of years. Most now offer computers which you can book to use the internet, and many even offer wireless internet so you can bring your own devices. With now offering services like digital media downloads, libraries are really showing they are looking to the future so they will still be able to meet the needs of their members for years to come.
